Solving and Creating Difficult Instances of Post's Correspondence Problem and Creating Difficult Instances of Post's Correspondence Problem

چکیده
Post’s correspondence problem (PCP) was invented by Emil L. Post in 1946. It is an undecidable problem, which means that it is impossible to find an algorithm to solve the whole problem. This problem has been extensively discussed in the theoretical computer science literature, but only recently did some researchers begin to look into the empirical properties of this problem. Although this problem cannot be completely solved, some of its instances can be solved and may have very long solutions. It is instructive and important to find instances that have very long shortest solutions to reveal new properties and understand the complexity of this problem. In this thesis, several problem-specific search enhancements have been employed to find the shortest solutions of instances efficiently and effectively. New disproof methods were invented to identify instances that have no solution. All of these methods made it possible to completely solve 7 PCP subclasses and to fully scan 3 other PCP subclasses. Our effort culminated in the discovery of 199 hard instances with very long shortest solutions and in setting new records for the hardest instances known in 4 PCP subclasses. In addition, we present experimental results on several important properties of PCP and on the search and disproof methods used. These results will lead to a better understanding of the theoretical and empirical properties of this problem.

Tackling Post's Correspondence Problem
Post’s correspondence problem (PCP) is a classic undecidable problem. Its theoretical unbounded search space makes it hard to judge whether a PCP instance has a solution, and to find the solutions if they exist. In this paper, we describe new application-dependent methods used to efficiently find optimal solutions to individual instances, and to identify instances with no solution. We also prov...
متن کاملSelecting Efficient Service-providers in Electric Power Distribution Industry Using Combinatorial Reverse Auction
In this paper, a combinatorial reverse auction mechanism is proposed for selecting the most efficient service-providers for resolving sustained power interruptions in multiple regions of an electric power distribution company’s responsibility area. Through this mechanism, supplying the required service in each region is assigned to only one potential service-provider considering two criteria in...
متن کاملTotal Termination of Term Rewriting is Undecidable
Usually termination of term rewriting systems (TRS's) is proved by means of a mono-tonic well-founded order. If this order is total on ground terms, the TRS is called totally terminating. In this paper we prove that total termination is an undecidable property of nite term rewriting systems. The proof is given by means of Post's Correspondence Problem.
متن کاملَA Multi-objective simulated annealing algorithm to solving flexible no-wait flowshop scheduling problems with transportation times
This paper deals with a bi-objective hybrid no-wait flowshop scheduling problem minimizing the makespan and total weighted tardiness, in which we consider transportation times between stages. Obtaining an optimal solution for this type of complex, large-sized problem in reasonable computational time by using traditional approaches and optimization tools is extremely difficult. This paper presen...
متن کاملAnimal Suffering: A Moorean Response to a Problem of Evil
In this paper, I propose a new response to a particular instance of the problem of evil: the problem of animal suffering. My solution, in brief, is that the rational theist may argue, justifiably, that an omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent God would not allow gratuitous animal suffering to occur, and, therefore, all instances of animal suffering that are encountered are not instanc...
